Metzner Expands Into Additional Business Sector

Metzner Maschinenbau GmbH has taken over the activities of Manz Tübingen GmbH in the busi-ness sector “Automation Solutions for Carbide Tools” and thus assumes a position as a leading producer of complex process automation systems for the manufacture of tungsten carbide tools.

Neu-Ulm, 08/06/2011. Metzner Maschinenbau GmbH, a leading manufacturer of cutting and converting ma-chinery for cable, rubber and plastics processing, has taken over the global activities of Manz Tübingen GmbH in the production of automation solutions for the manufacture indexable tooling inserts in tungsten carbide and ceramic powder. The takeover was effective on 1st June 2011. With the entry into this new business sector, Metzner is consciously aiming at an expansion of its existing activities. Metzner CEO, Gerhard Rauch said: “After the past few years, it was important for us to place Metzner on a broader and economically more secure base. The new business field is a significant step in that direction.”

The Manz Tübingen GmbH company has, over the last 20 years, established and developed the field of automa-tion solutions for carbide tools and has successfully driven this development on the international stage. However, in recent years, the company has evolved away from being an automation specialist and emerged as a supplier of processing machinery for the industrial production of lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells as well as light-weight carbon-fibre composite components. The rapid development of these sectors led Manz Tübingen GmbH to make the decision to exit the carbide tooling sector, as part of a strategic re-orientation and re-focusing of the com-pany. This departure was solely the result of the re-focusing on the strongly-growing sectors, as Albrecht Werner, Manz Tübingen CEO emphasised: “This strategic decision, after more than 20 years as a successful supplier of automation systems for the carbide industry, was not taken easily. For this reason, we are delighted to have found in Metzner a competent successor with the necessary resources, know-how and development capabilities, who can continue to expand and develop this business.”

Metzner will take over the whole Manz carbide product portfolio in and begin production and marketing with immediate effect. Thanks to the contractually agreed co-operation between Metzner and Manz, customers’ en-quiries and any transitional complications can be properly dealt with. In addition, Manz Tübingen will provide all essential support for new and further development in automation processes. Furthermore, the carbide sales per-sonnel will be transferred to Metzner.

Carbide Indexable Inserts
Because of the large quantities involved, coupled with the low price and the rigorous technical demands, the manufacture of indexable inserts calls for a high degree of automation. For this reason, the industry has been continually working for about 20 years to automate the process, consisting as it does of several stages. High-capability robots play an important role, in combination with reliable graphics-processing systems and a highly flexible and operator-friendly control panel. There are different sizes and forms of indexable inserts made specifi-cally to suit each individual application.
