Metzner establishes new E-MOBILITY business division

Neu-Ulm, 23. August 2018. The change from the combustion engine to electric propulsion is on everyone’s lips. As a consequence of this profound change, it is beyond question that the production of electric vehicles will see a significant increase in the coming years – even though it might be some time before this type of propulsion will be found on the streets everywhere.

The trendsetting drive technology requires the employment of special high-voltage cables with special plug systems, which necessitate a lot of cable preparation and assembly work. At the moment, these cables are mostly processed manually, but in a few years the demand from the market will no longer be able to be met by this method.

Metzner Maschinenbau, based in Neu-Ulm recognized this some years ago. Since 2013, Metzner has undertaken pioneering work to develop new methods to enable safe and reliable automatic processing of high-voltage cables including the assembly of the plug systems. For around half of all the stages in the processing chain which are necessary in the production of these cables, Metzner can already offer practically proven solutions. Validations by numerous major plug system manufacturers, harness manufacturers and vehicle manufacturers as well as granted patents underline the culture of innovation and competencies of the company.

Metzner Maschinenbau is firmly of the opinion that in the future, it will be necessary, for reasons of cost and quality, that the manufacture of the special high-voltage cables used in electric vehicles will have to be automated. In order better to address these demands, the company has decided to bundle its activities in the high-voltage cable sector and to establish the new E-Mobility division.

The Metzner Maschinenbau product range has over time included sem-automatic machines as well as solutions with a high degree of automation. Specially for high-volume production, fully automatic transfer lines have been developed, which enable cycle times of ten to twelve seconds for processing each end of a cable, says company CEO Gerhard Rauch. “We are working very hard to cover all the process chain from cable cut-to-length right through to installation of the plugs and to offer our customers all the various stages of process automation.“
